Studio performance: ‘Grounded, Untethered’ and ‘Soft Masc’

On Friday 19 July 2024 myself, Shri Sriram and Neil Valentine shared a live studio performance of our experimental improvised pieces ‘Grounded, Untethered’ and ‘Soft Masc’.

Each piece used a one page score to provide an overall shape and guidance to the improvised performance.

‘Grounded, Untethered’ is an exploration of belonging — on the Earth, in our bodies, in our families and communities — and the tension that exists in the space between being grounded in these things, and untethered from them.

‘Soft Masc’ is an attempt to understand our complex relationships to masculinity. The piece calls us to pay attention to quieter voices and sounds, giving strength and assertion to their whisperings, and making space for them to belong, however uncomfortable their truth.

Video and audio recordings of two pieces will now be edited and released in the coming weeks.

Finally, I want to take a moment to that Shri and Neil for collaborating with me on this project, as well as everyone who came to be part of the audience on Friday — I am grateful beyond words for all your love and support.
